His type is best described as by Bill Francis, a Cruft’s judge of beagles when awarding him best of breed, — ‘he is a pocket battleship’. The hound was purchased by the author and authoress from Canada when over seven years of age but still obtained his title in Britain. The magnificent foreface, topline, shortness and set-on of stern together with great depth of body and beautiful legs and feet typify possibly the greatest beagle yet known of this type. It is interesting to compare this type with the other great, ‘Triumph’ This is not to say that the other hounds pictured in this book have not their own greatness. Radley Triumph of Appeline '47 Sire: Springfield Traitor Dam: Eton College Wisdom From "Beagles and Beagling" by Douglas and Carol Appleton: This is a lemon pied hound. The photograph was taken when he was showing the first signs of dropsy at twelve years of age. It is used to illustrate how a quality hound never coarsens with age. Triumph bred by the Radley College Beagles who did not keep dog hounds, went to the Warwickshire Beagles - Master, Courtney Williams, MH, - who won with him the champion cup at Peterborough and Honitorn. Handled by Billy Norman and purchased by the author at the auction of the Warwickshire Beagles when he was over six years of age, he is the only hound ever to have won the highest honours at British hound shows and then go on to his Kennel Club Championship. Though not appreciated by possibly less experienced breeders throughout many countries of the world his influence on present day hounds is still immense. An interesting story is that having been left out after hunting one night, Triumph was found in the morning stiff and sore. Bathed and taken to London the excitement which the show ring always had for him enabled him to pull himself together and win the challenge certificate under Charles Hardwick, MH.
