CHAMPION CRAFTSMAN OF WALNUT HALL
Mrs. Harkness Edwards, Owner
Donerail, Kentucky
Vying with Esquire whose page size dog in color each month has introduced, a dignitary from many breeds, our March cover shows a ranking member of our special variety, the imposing champion Craftsman of Walnut Hall. His son, Guardsman, is the choice selection for the March magazine for men. Guardsman is one of the seven champions sired by Craftsman, the others — Crowehaven Craftsman, Gnome of Walnut Hall, Garnet of Walnut Hall, Topper of Walnut Hall, Gunman of Walnut Hall, Graphite of Walnut Hall, in addition to several on their way to the crowning title, leaves little doubt but what Craftsman will symbolize his clan as something more than little rabbit hounds. Best in Show seven times, sixty times Best of Hound Group, Craftsman takes leadership with the eminent beagle en-voys of all time in attracting attention to our sport in making dog folks aware of the breed. Down in the Kentucky Bluegrass country famous for its studs, at Donerail, Craftsman still reigns top hound over the Walnut Hall Kennels of Mrs. Harkness Edwards, where he was bred and retired to the stud in 1942.
Walnut Hall scenes - above the "lady of Walnut Hall" Mrs. Harkness Edwards, Donerail, Ky., starting out on a Sunday morning hunt with her pack (that is probably how "Polly" keeps that trim form). Right, Mrs. Edwards famous bitch Ch. Carefree of Walnut Hall.

THE 1945 BEAGLE YEAR BOOK
Closely resembling her dam in head, general conformation and coloring, Hurray is out of Carol of Walnut Hall, she's a daughter of Ch. Saddlerock Sandman and Ch. Charity of Walnut Hall. Regally bred through her dam, the other half is equally imposing, for Hurray's sire is Walnut Hall's famous color bearer, Ch. Craftsman of Walnut Hall, the high mogul whose show career brought him eleven best in all breed shows, sixty-one times best hound in show. Now retired, his ring days over, his brilliant producing record has brought him eight champion sons and daughters. His sire, Ch. Thornridge Toney is recognized generally for influence in creating distinctive hounds — beautiful type: Craftsman's dam is that matchless producing bitch Ch. Charmac Healthy, the dam of eight champions. Strictly line bred with Charity a full sister to Craftsman gives two close crosses to Toney, Healthy and Sandman. Completing her championship with a three pointer at Butler, Pa., Hurray's other three point win was at Twin Brooks. She gathered two points each at Mercer County, winners; Massillon, best of winners and best opposite sex; same at Rubber City; Erie County Vacationland, winners; Niagara Falls and Buffalo, best of winners; one point for best of winners at Dayton. Miss Edwards, Hurray's owner, is the daughter of Mrs. Harkness Edwards, Walnut Hall Farm, Donerail, Kentucky.

THE SEPTEMBER COVER
A trio of champions from Walnut Hall adorn the title page this month. One son and two granddaughters of the great Ch. Craftsman — all are home-bred.
Ch. Hurray of Walnut Hall (left) was bred and is owned by Mary Suydam Edwards, daughter of Mrs. Harkness Edwards. Sired by Ch. Craftsman of Walnut Hall, she brings together successfully blended famous families through Ch. Thornridge Toney (Craftsman's sire), Ch. Charmac Healthy (his dam) who is by Ch. Saddlerock Sandman x Charmac Judy (dual Ch. Seibold's Panel x Ch. Whereway Judy), giving Hurray a double cross of Sandman through Healthy as Hurray's dam, Ch. Carol of Walnut Hall is by Sandman x Ch. Charity of Walnut Hall.
Ch. Clergyman (center) and his sister Cadence are sired by Ch. Graphite of Walnut Hall, a son of Craftsman and Ch. Seibold's Glory; their dam being Ch. Cheerful of Walnut Hall, a sister to Ch. Craftsman, which brings their sire and dam, Ch. Thornridge Toney and Ch. Charmac Healthy into the picture again.
Breeders desiring these regal, dominant bloodlines can select a stud dog that represents many years of selective breeding and commanding ancestry as Clergyman, who only recently completed his championship is too closely bred to the bitches at Walnut Hall for use at home and is offered for sale. Address Mrs. Harkness Edwards, Walnut Hall Kennels, Donerail, Ky.
